Tom Angleberger, author of Rocket and Groot, visits Years 5 and 6

24/5/2017

Year 5 and Year 6 had a fantastically funny afternoon with the best-selling author Tom Angleberger, who is on a  week long whirlwind book tour in Britain. Tom is an author-illustrator who has written books featuring the popular characters Rocket and Groot, from the Guardians of the Galaxy series. After explaining that his job is like playing with toys in  a sandpit, and making up adventures for his characters, he got Year 5 and Year 6 to make up a story with him right there in the Junior hall! Tom answered lots of questions from the audience, and kept us all laughing. Some students came up to draw for Tom, and one had a paper airplane folding competition with him!

Then everybody got to see how to draw the characters Rocket and Groot for themselves. Tom was so impressed by our drawings that he took photos of them. Afterwards  we could buy copies of the series , and Tom not only signed them, but drew characters inside too. He also signed some students' drawings, and added his own creations.  What a great day!

Author Event with MG Leonard

17/5/2017

The best-selling children’s author MG Leonard visited us on Friday, 5th May. She revealed to us that her name is Maya and told us about her new book, Beetle Queen which is the sequel to Beetle Boy. The books are fast-paced adventures which will make you think about beetles in a completely different light! We heard how beetles are used in the fashion industry, and Maya also explained to us the term 'entomophagy' (eating insects), and how it could help solve world hunger. We didn't really like the idea though. Maya has two pet beetles at home, which she has no plans to eat!

We were thrilled by Maya's dramatic reading from Beetle Queen: Lucretia Cutter really is an evil character...worse than Cruella DeVille!

Afterwards we were able to buy personally signed and dedicated copies of her books, provided by Pea Green Boat Books, and have a chat with the author.
