Class 8: 26th May
Theme: Optical Illusions (chosen by Shahria, who was also the scribe)
We looked at a strange painting by Rene Magritte, then 4 paintings by Bridget Riley. These were all abstract, black and white, and were quite hard to look at as they seemed to play tricks with our eyes. Lastly we saw an optical illusion ‘game’ which we tried out: some of us could see a bizarre effect, but it didn’t work with everyone!
Shahria selected the following comments:
An optical illusion is designed to trick your mind
Some of Bridget Riley’s paintings seem static, but others seem to move as you watch.
They look hyper-realistic. The blackness might be fake.
To me it looks like there are lines, but when you look again, there aren’t really.
It makes us look everywhere. The lines and shapes keep disappearing and reappearing.
The colours change. There is not really any orange or yellow, but there seems to be .
Is there a shadow? We are not sure.
Rayyanul: They are all about black on white.
The illusion game shows a broken bridge but as you bring your finger closer the two broken parts seem to connect.
