Year 5 Arts Council Summer Term 2023
3rd Meeting
Group 1: Class 7: Isra, Iman, Ayra
Class 8: Ibtihsan, Ahyan, Ayaan
Class 9: Farhan, Amina, Reem
Theme: Materials, Fabrics and Textures (chosen by Ayan)
Scribe: Ahyan Director: Ayra
First we looked at and felt real objects made of different materials and with different textures. We talked about how the objects would be used and why they were made like that. These objects were:
*a yellow satin coat, made for a Syrian boy in about 1910
*a Brazilian woven basket made from plant fibres
*a plastic bracelet
*glass earrings
*a bracelet made from plant seeds
*a painted paper-mache box from India
*a metal brooch
*a ball of cotton string
*a metal bell with a woolen loop
*a ceramic bowl
Then we looked at a few paintings where the artist had shown the textures of objects:
*Suzanne Valadon’s painting of red and green smooth, shiny peppers on a white plate. There was a glint of red on the knife, to show the reflection of the pepper in the metal knife blade.
Johannes Vermeer’s painting of a woman pouring milk into a jug. The paint is quite rough on the wall behind, and on the woman’s face, as well as the bowl and jug, but the milk coming out is very smooth and liquid. The artist shows the light coming from the window. This was painted on wood.
