Design and Technology

Artsmark Statement of Commitment 2022
Design and Technology provides the opportunity to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and to explore the designed and made world in which we all live and work. Our pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

Our teachers, supported by a specialist Design and Technology teacher, work with each class on projects to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of materials, shell and frame structures, mechanical and electrical systems, programming for control, food technology, designing, making and evaluating products.

Children are encouraged to be creative and innovative, and are actively encouraged to think about important issues such as sustainability and enterprise.

Planning, as with the Art curriculum, is linked where possible, but not exclusively to the wider school curriculum. A specialist teacher (who also teaches at The Royal College of Art and Camberwell School of Art) brings a wide perspective and understanding to the lessons that are planned and taught with a fascinating collection of artefacts gathered from world travels. Planning develops skills and knowledge of materials and construction processes progressively throughout the school, with the understanding that many of our children will have little or no experiences to bring from beyond school.
