Cathy Cassidy visits... along with pupils from local secondary schools

7/2/2017

On Thursday 2nd February 2017 best-selling author Cathy Cassidy visited Blue Gate Fields Junior School to introduce her new book ‘Broken Heart Club’, which explores friendship.

She also talked about her best-selling Chocolate Box Girls series. Cathy shared stories of her early writing days, her career in journalism working for teen magazines and about her life as a children’s writer, meeting her readers from all around the world.

Cathy gave us her top tips for writing, friendship and daydreaming! She told us about ways to get more information from cathycassidy.com and CathyCassidy Dreamcatcher blog, Cathy’s online magazine written by and for her readers.

There was also an audience quiz to discover which Cathy Cassidy character we are most like! Afterwards we had the chance to ask questions, which Cathy answered with good humour.

We had also invited some Year 7 guests from 4 of Tower Hamlets’ secondary schools: Central Foundation Girls', Morpeth School, Swanlea, & Bow. Cathy stayed to sign all the books which everyone had bought. It was a really long queue!  Everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon. One of the things that Cathy liked best about her visit was the wonderful artwork in our school, and she especially enjoyed using the beautiful teacups, made by talented Blue Gate Fields Junior potters!

 Poetry Slam Group Poem

Make a Bridge of Your Heart

Make a bridge of your heart
Let love be your path
Make du’a

For the young mother
At the top of the tower
In a silky black headscarf
Who wraps her child in the folds of her hijab
Make du’a

For the girl who is an endangered animal
Lost in the crowds of a cruel carnival
Make du’a

For the child who is finding it hard to learn
For the father who is finding it hard to earn
Make du’a

For the person who is finding it hard to live
For the mother trying hard for her kid
Make du’a

For the man with an empty house in his heart
For the boy trying to keep it together but it keeps falling apart
Make du’a

For the refugee who has to leave their family
Who carries their country on their back
Trying to put their land back on track
Make a bridge of your heart
Let love be your path.
On Thursday 2nd February 2017 Class 8 took part in the 3rd annual Tower Hamlets Key Stage 2 Poetry Slam.

The poet Joelle Taylor worked with Jashminara and Class 8 writing and performing poetry.  She chose a team of 6 and one individual to perform their poems at the SLAMbassadors Event, which was at the Rich Mix on Bethnal Green Road.

The whole class went to the Slam to cheer on our poets. It was an amazing experience and really developed Class 8’s creativity and joy in writing and performing poetry.

There were 5 other schools also taking part, and the competition was stiff.

We were overjoyed to win two trophies! Our best year ever at the Slam event: roll on 2018!
