Years 4 and 5 met Guy Jones, author of 'Ice garden' and his new title 'The Fire Maker'. In an entertaining assembly Guy told us how he created his characters and stories, and invited us to join him to invent a new story. He used a clever technique to construct our narrative. Everyone got carried away with suggestions, and we were so engaged that Sue decided to have a creative writing competition based on those ideas. So, get those entries rolling in! The first prize will be a signed copy of 'The Fire Maker'. Entry forms available from class teachers, or the library. This was a real year of celebration for us at Blue Gate Fields Juniors as we had not one, not two, but three winners in the Tower Hamlets Creative Writing Competition! Our librarian, Sue was so proud of the great work done by the winning pupils. In fact, when introducing the competition winners, Jacob of the organisers (TH Schools Library Service) read out a part of the 'Little Red Riding Hood' story, written by our Year 3 short story winner. We had joint first prize winners for the Short Story element, and a second prize winner in the Poetry section. All the works will be available later in the year, in a book. So, we will have some real published authors of our own! The presentation ceremony was on the 30th floor of the Clifford Chance building, Canary Wharf. Such dizzying views! It was an evening of mounting anticipation, as the results were called out in reverse order. We were on the edge of our seats, until we found out the marvellous results! The certificates and prizes were awarded by the prize-winning poet, Joseph Coelho. We were lucky to have Joe launching our Poetry Week a few years ago, so he knew our school well. The following day our three winners attended a workshop with him, and wrote a group poem with some children from Cubitt Town school (see below). Please look on our Poetry blog for the prize- winning poem. Check in the library in the Autumn term for the THCW publication, and read the great short stories and poems. Clothes Poem
Clothes are jewels Swishing and rustling. Ants in my pants! Shoes make me feel like I’m walking on air. Floating, floating, floating in Space. Shiny, shiny, shiny shoes, Tongues flapping as they dance As if they’re on Strictly Come Dancing. A poem created at the Tower Hamlets Creative Writing workshop, with Joseph Coelho, using his MORERAPS method. |
