The Children's Bookshow 2018

31/10/2018

Charlotte's Year 5 Literacy Group were very lucky to be able to work with the master storyteller, Daniel Morden, when he visited BGFJ ahead of his performance at The Old Vic Theatre, as part of this year's Children's Bookshow. Daniel told us that he likes stories from 'long, long, long, long, long, long ( x 10!) ... long ago! We discussed with him the elements of a good story, and Daniel said that his favourite childhood book had been the stories of The Brothers Grimm. We were spellbound as Daniel retold a tale called 'The Water of Life'. He made us jump, even when we knew it was coming! Leaving the story on a cliffhanger, Daniel asked us to imagine what happens next, and write our own endings.
On Friday 2nd November we made the trip to The Old Vic to see Daniel in action, as he captivated the audience with more stories. We were all really privileged to receive a free gift of our very own copy of Daniel's new book, 'Secret Tales from Wales', each of which he signed for every one of us!

Sam Wu proves a hit with the children of Blue Gate Fields!

17/10/2018

On Wednesday 17th October, Katie Tsang, visited BGFJ  to talk  to Years 3 & 4  about the series, ‘Sam Wu is not afraid’. We were also pleased to be  joined in the Hall by our Year 2 guests from the Infants school.
Katie writes the books with her husband, Kevin Tsang, and we think that the books are really funny! Katie told us what the inspiration for the series had been, and created a story with us, by asking us to come up with our own ideas for characters, and what they might get up to. Katie also read an extract from 'Sam Wu is not Afraid of Ghosts', which explained why Sam Wu decided that he had to be The Brave One in his friendship group. A very embarrassing thing had happened to him on a school trip to the Science Museum! Read the book to find out more.
Brick Lane Books provided a bookstall for us, and lots of children had their books signed by Katie after the event.
Look in the library for 'Sam Wu is not Afraid of Ghosts' and 'Sam Wu is not Afraid of Sharks'. New titles in the series will be coming soon!
