Sian’s Year 6 Literacy Group was extremely fortunate to meet the brilliant poet Valerie Bloom, who came in to work with them. Everyone also received a free copy of her book, ‘Hot Like Fire and other poems’. Valerie performed some of her poems for them, which are often based on memories of her childhood in Jamaica. She discussed different styles of poetry, and then everyone wrote a ‘Kenning’ together. This is a kind of riddle poem. You have to think of a subject for your poem and describe what it does, not what it looks like. It’s much harder than it sounds! The Vikings used to write riddles like this. Can you guess what is being described in the poem we wrote? Sian’s Literacy Group’s Kenning (with a bit of help from Valerie Bloom!)
