The event was organised by the Tower Hamlets Schools Library Service to celebrate World Book Day. Dame Jacqueline spoke about how she'd become a writer, sharing some of her school experiences with us. She also explained how she chose the name for one of her best known characters. One day, whilst having a bath, she was looking around for inspiration. She'd already decided on the name Tracy, but couldn't think of a surname. Suddenly she spotted a beaker, and the problem was solved: Tracy Beaker (which also became a TV series). Well, it couldn't be Tracy Toilet, could it!
Everybody was given a 'Goody Bag' filled with free treats, and two of our group were luckier still, as they got to meet Jacqueline, when they had their books signed by her. As there were 1,000 children at the event, it wasn't possible for everyone to do this, so it was a real treat.
You can watch the event on the Tower Hamlets Schools Library Service website.
