If you enjoy Quentin Blake's illustration, have a go at colouring in this creature to jazz it up!
Click here to download this magnificent creature!

A HUGE thank you to all the mummies and daddies, carers who have dedicated their time in supporting the children with their learning.  We know it has been challenging and we can't thank you enough.  Year 3, you have been absolutely stupendous for keeping up with your learning, WELL DONE!  And, although you'll be relaxing over the summer holidays, remember, learning doesn't stop here!  Learning can take place anywhere and everywhere!

Take a look at some work by Zakariya, Surah and Sahra:

9-9.30: Click on the picture to join today’s PE with Bluebird and Wolfie while also practising your times tables!

Remember to take a sip of water if you need one.

Try to keep moving during the summer holidays!

Lesson 1: Numeracy

1) Warm-up: Download today’s work here.
a. What is the greatest number you can make with these digits?
Picture
b. What is the lowest number you can make with these digits?
Picture
c. The numbers along the top go into this multiplication machine and come out with the answers along the bottom.

Each of the numbers going in have all been multiplied by the same number to get each answer.

What is the number?

Picture
2) Today, we are going to be adding fractions! First, watch this video to find out how to add fractions.
Have a look at this example to help you:
Picture
Picture
3) Add these fractions together. Use the shapes to help you.

Lesson 2: Literacy

1) Warm-up: Transform these sentences with expanded noun phrases. First, recap what an expanded noun phrase is by watching this video.
Picture
An expanded noun phrase is a phrase with a noun and adjectives that describe the noun.

For example:

Noun: bike
Noun phrase: the
bike
Expanded noun phrase: the enormous, new bike with shiny bells and glistening ribbons.

If you use more than one adjective, they must be separated by a comma.
a. The _____________ boat bobbed on the _____________ waves.

b. My _______ eyes opened wide when I saw the _____________ dinosaur with ____________ charging towards me.

2) Picture story! You have worked so hard this year, so take some time today to create your own story using everything you have learned in Literacy! If you like, choose one of the pictures below to help you write your story.

You might like to use:
  • Expanded noun phrases
  • Exciting verbs
  • Speech with inverted commas
  • Adverbials of time or place
  • Interesting prepositions
  • Subordinating or coordinating conjunctions
Why not draw some of your own pictures once you’ve finished!

Lesson 3: PSHCE

It can feel very frightening being separated from our friends and family and away from school and other places that we enjoy visiting. It is OK to feel scared! Sometimes we need to be reminded of all the beauty and love all around us.

Watch this video to remind yourself of some of the incredible habitats, animals and plants that help to make our world such a beautiful place.
Thinking about others can also help us to stop feeling scared. Have a go at this kindness lotto. Cross off each act of kindness when you’ve done it, but don’t forget to also do something kind for yourself!

If you enjoyed the first video, don’t miss this one!
Picture
Before we finish, write a list of some of the fun things you’d like to do over the summer holidays!

It might be playing in the park, helping your adults to bake, reading five books, learning to tell the time, anything you like!

Tick each thing off once you’ve done it.

Use this sheet if you like.
Picture

End of the day:
Great work today! Today’s story is called Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. Oliver Jeffers wrote this story for his baby son.

If you enjoyed reading this book, click here and Oliver Jeffers will teach you how to make your own constellation viewer at home!
Picture
Remember to keep reading over the summer holidays and practising your times tables and telling the time.

Most importantly, though,
remember to relax, have fun and enjoy your summer holiday! You deserve it after all of your hard work this year! We cannot wait to see you next again!

Merhaba (Hello) Year 3!  How are you feeling this morning? Let’s start the day with a morning yoga session.

Here is today’s timetable:
Picture
Well done Year 3 for working extremely hard and sending in your learning. Have a look at the work sent by Rayan R, Yusrah, Sahra, Ridwan, Yusuf K and Surah.

9 - 9.30: Morning Yoga

Lesson 1: Literacy

Today, we are going to learn how to write a set of instructions. Watch the video below to find out more.
Picture
Instructions tell the reader how to do something like how to cook a meal or how to build a chair. They have to be written clearly so the reader can easily understand each step.

Instructions need to include:
  • A title saying what the instructions are about
  • A list of what is needed
  • Step-by-step actions written in chronological order (the order in which they happen)

When you write instructions you should:
  • Use command (bossy) verbs such as: chop, mix, stir
  • Use time conjunctions such as: first, next, then, until
  • Use numbers for each new step
Activity 1

Read the instructions on the worksheet below about how to wash an elephant then answer the questions.
Picture
Questions:

Either write your answers down on paper, think about them or discuss them with someone at home.

1. What is the title and where can you find it?

2. What information is in the grey box?

3. How do you know what order to carry out the instructions in?

4. What type of word does each instruction start with?
Activity 2

Watch this clip in which presenters Dick and Dom read from George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.

Listen carefully to the ingredients George uses to make his grandma’s medicine.
Picture
Now, imagine you’re making your own medicine for a horrible grandma.

Make a list of five ingredients that you would use and explain what effect each one would have on grandma.

Top tip!

Don’t forget to say how much to use.

For example:
  • A tablespoon of strawberry jam to make her cheeks more rosy.
  • A whole bottle of perfume to make her smell like flowers.
Activity 3

Now write a set of instructions telling other people how they could make your medicine.

Remember to include:
  • A title. You could start with ‘How to…’
  • A list of ingredients and how much you need of each one.
  • Numbered steps and time conjunctions to show what order the ingredients should be added in.
  • An explanation of why each ingredient should be added.

For example:

How to improve a horrible grandma

1. First of all, sprinkle two teaspoons of coffee into the pot to give grandma some energy.

Top tip!
Don't forget to use command (bossy) verbs such as mix, stir, add, pour and chop.

Picture

Break: Time for another brain break.  Go grab yourself a drink and talk to someone about how you’re doing!  Remember to wash your hands for 20 seconds if you’re getting something to eat or after going to the toilet!

Joke:  Why does a seagull fly over the sea?

Answer:
Because if it flew over the bay, it would be a baygull.

If you have any funny jokes to tell us, why not send them to year3@bgfjs.org so we can share them with everyone?

Lesson 2: Geography

Last week for Geography, we looked at ways in which to save the rainforest. Today, we are going to build on this and think about how we can show awareness. Watch the clip below on how you can change the world.
What is Fair Trade? Watch the clip below to find out.
To find out more, click on the image.
Picture
Did you know that Fair Trade and climate change are connected?  In developing countries, climate change can affect crops produced by small-sized farmers.  Having a Fair Trade Co-operative helps to ensure these farmers get the best price for their goods. Also, Fair Trade discourages mass farming and encourages more products to be made by hand.  Therefore, creating less of an impact on the carbon footprint. This is one way to show awareness and help save the world.

Your mission!

Think of some ways on what you can do to save the world.  It could be recycling, using less electricity or turning the tap off. Your task is to create a poster showing awareness to others but remember to explain closely what you can do to help.

To find out more click here on how we can reduce the carbon footprint.

Picture
Picture

Lunch: It’s time to relax.  First things first, remember to wash your hands for 20 seconds before you eat!

Riddle: It has keys, but no locks. It has space, but no room. You can enter, but can’t go inside. What is it?

(The answer will be revealed at the end of the day...)

Picture
Lunch time activity:

13/7/2020

Good morning Year 3, and welcome to the last week of Summer term 2020.
A tremendous well done for working so hard under new, strange circumstances.  We shall see each other soon!

Here is today's timetable:
Picture
Picture
Thank you again for working so hard and sending in your learning. Have a look at the slide show to see Friday's learning by Rayan R, Ridwan and Sahra.

9-9.30:  It's Monday so Joe Wicks is here and ready to wake your body and mind! Remember to drink lots of water after!

Lesson 1: Literacy
Today we are going to listen to a poem by the amazing Michael Rosen and write your own poem about do's and don'ts.
You will need paper and a pen for today's learning.

Life is full of rules. Michael’s poem contains a few rules that begin with ‘don’t’.
You children are always being told what to do. Now it’s YOUR turn!

Watch and listen carefully to Michael perform, ‘Don’t’.
  • Think about what type of poem it is, is it a jokey poem? an angry poem? a scary poem?

Listen to the poem again and read the poem below along with Michael. You can download the words here.

Don’t

Don’t do,
Don’t do,
Don’t do that.
Don’t pull faces,
Don’t tease the cat.

Don’t pick your ears,
Don’t be rude at school.
Who do they think I am?

Some kind of fool?

One day
they’ll say
Don’t put toffee in my coffee
don’t pour gravy on the baby
don’t put beer in his ear
don’t stick your toes up your nose.

Don’t put confetti on your spaghetti
and don’t squash peas on your knees.

Don’t put ants in your pants
don’t put mustard in your custard

don’t chuck jelly at the telly

and don’t throw fruit at a computer
don’t throw fruit at a computer.

Don’t what?
Don’t throw fruit at a computer.
Don’t what?
Don’t throw fruit at a computer.
Who do they think I am?
Some kind of fool?
Activity 1.
Answer these questions in full sentences.  You can download a question sheet here.
  • What are you told to do most often?
  • What are you told not to do most often?
  • How would this change if you were someone (or something) else… a teacher, a baby, a pet dog, rain or wind?
  • If there were only one ‘do’ rule and one ‘don’t’ rule in the world, what should they be?

Activity 2.
Write a "Don't" poem of dos and don’ts for parents, brothers, sisters or teachers-choose who you are giving advice too.

  • You can either repeat ‘do’ or ‘don’t’ on each line,
  • or divide your poem into two parts, one for ‘dos’ and one for ‘don’ts’

Use Michael's poem as a guide and help. Magpie parts you like, maybe you want to write your lines like his?
Activity 3.
Write a poem of ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ to help a friend in an strange situation.
For example:
  • they are made of glass
  • their hat is on fire
  • they are turned into a flea
  • they are sad
  • they are a snowman
  • they are an elephant in a supermarket
  • they are about to stop a war
  • they are walking a tightrope
Picture
Can you think of any more imaginary situations that might need rules?
Choose one of these situations and think about the advice you would give to your friend.

You could start by making a list of the advice you would give, and then turn this into a poem.

We’d love to read your fantastic dos and don't poems! Please send them to
  year3@bgfjs.org

Break: Time for a break.  Grab yourself a drink, and join Jaime at the seaside to find out what is in the Treasure chest!

Lesson 2: Numeracy
Starter:
Practice your 8 times table at Hit the Button.
Hit the Button

Activity 1
Today, we are going to learn how to measure capacity and volume using millilitres and litres.

Watch the video below to find out how you can measure volume and capacity in millilitres and litres.
Picture

Remember
  • Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold.
  • Volume is how much liquid is in the container.
We can measure both in millilitres and litres.

Measuring in litres and millilitre
A litre is much more than a millilitre.
1 litre = 1000 millilitres
We shorten litres to ‘l’ and we can shorten millilitres to 'ml'.
So we might also say:
1 l = 1000 ml
Picture

Activity 2
What's left in the house?
  • Find as many containers in your kitchen as you can that are holding liquids, such as a bottle of milk or squash.
  • Check how much liquid they hold when they are full (you should be able to find this on the packaging.)
  • Estimate how much liquid is left in each container.
If possible, use a measuring jug for each to check your estimates.

Picture

Activity 3
Drinks time
Using a measuring jug, make yourself a drink!
For example, you could use one of the recipes below:

Picture
Picture
Why not change these recipes to use the drinks you have at home?

Challenge
Download these capacity and volume activity sheets here and here.
Picture
Picture
Well done for your hard work, remember to send us a picture of your fruit cocktails and learning here year3@bgfjs.org

Lunch: It’s time to take a nice, long brain break and eat something healthy and drink lots of water. Remember to wash your hands for 20 seconds!

Riddle: What belongs to you, but other people use it more than you?
Answer at the end of the day!

Lesson 3: Art

5 Minute Silly Doodle. Set the timer here and get ready!

Today you are going to draw your favourite animal

You have 5 minutes ......3, 2, 1 GO!!!!
Picture
Today we shall do Art with Liz! We are going to draw a Close-Up of an object.
You will need paper and pencils for today's lesson.

Picture
*Can you do a close-up drawing of something patterned, like a cup or a scarf?
Picture

End of the day:

Well done for working so hard today, we hope you’ve had a good day!

It is time to listen to a growth mindset book "The Koala Who Could" By Rachel Bright. Sit back and enjoy, you deserve it!
We shall see you tomorrow for another great day of learning! Try to read at least 20-30 minutes a day either on Active Learn (Bug Club) or with a book.

Answer to the riddle - your name.

Remember, we would love to hear from you. So, if you would like to send your work to us or ask questions, email these to year3@bgfjs.org
