Today in Science, we looked at the different parts of the body associated with digestion. We learnt that digestion starts in the mouth and is the process of breaking down food in our body. We also learnt that our small intestine is 6 metres long whereas our large intestine is 1.5 metres long. Did you know our stomach is the size of two of our fists? During this term, class 6 have been investigating which liquids do the most damage to teeth. They set up a fair test, keeping everything the same (jars, eggshells, amount of liquid and where the jars were placed in the classroom) apart from the 6 different liquids: water, cocoa cola, blackcurrant juice, orange juice, vinegar and milk. Class 6 predicted that water would do the least damage as this is good for teeth whereas cocoa cola would do the most damage as this contains a large amount of sugar. After a week, the eggshells were taken out of the jars to be examined. Using their results table, class 6 observed that the liquid that did the most damage to teeth was vinegar and not cocoa cola as predicted. This was because the vinegar turned the eggshell into a deflated balloon.
