Bench Book

15/6/2015

Jackie’s literacy group have worked exceptionally hard on the National Literacy Trust Book Bench project this term. As part of this project, they threw themselves into studying a focus book and used writing, drama and art to explore the themes and issues within it. The group chose the gripping novel ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens and were all so moved by Oliver’s story, his life in the workhouse and his relationships with characters such as Fagin and the artful dodger. The group also visited the Foundling Hospital near Russell Square and discovered what life was like as a founding in Victorian London.

With the help of our amazing artist in residence, Julia, the group worked tirelessly on some incredible artwork using still life and life drawings. These were themed around Victorian artefacts and characters in the book. These were put together as part of a collage which created our extraordinary book bench!

The bench was selected to go on display at The Embassy Tea Gallery and, there, the group also met the author Eleanor Updale whose book ‘Montmorency’ had also inspired another bench.

You can now see the fabulous bench for yourselves on display in our school opposite the library.
