15/5/2020

Good morning Year 5!

We hope that you enjoyed yesterday's learning. We love hearing from you so do keep emailing us at year5@bgfjs.org, with work that you are proud of or with any questions. Remember that you can also email Kaz or Julianne at well-being@bgfjs.org, with any worries you might have.

You have nearly completed your 7th week of home learning and we are so proud of you. Let's see what we are getting up to today!

Here is today's timetable:

9am - Before we start today's PE Challenge, Emma is going to tell us a little bit about why we exercise.

Touch your toe. Wave to Joe. Right, let's go!

Lesson 1 - Numeracy
Today we would like you to complete the Weekly Challenge on BBC Bitesize. Click on the link below to get the activities and remember that all good learners go into the pit!

Break - Going into the learning pit is hard work! Make sure you wash your hands for 20 seconds, have a glass of water and count on your fingers 10 things you are looking forward to.

Lesson 2 - Literacy
I don't know about you, but I can't wait to find out what happens to Varjack, Holly and all of the cats! Oh and I wonder where Cludge has been all of this time... Click on the 2 links below to finish the story:
WOW! What a fantastic end to the story! So it turns out that Cludge wasn't as scary as we first thought; he was a gentle hero all along. We have really enjoyed listening to the story of Varjak Paw and are very grateful to Phil Wickens, who has kindly spent his time bringing the story to life *insert round of applause and a woop*.

Now that we have finished listening to the story of Varjak Paw, we would like you to create a book review.

First, spend some time thinking about the questions below:
  • Did you enjoy the story? Why?
  • Was it similar/different to other stories you have read? Why?
  • What key events took place in the story?
  • Was there a moral or hidden message to the story?
  • How did Varjak Paw's character change?
  • Did you enjoy the author's style of writing? Why?

Now, use the template below to create a book review of Varjak Paw:

Lunch - Enjoy a healthy lunch and ... you guessed it, wash your hands for 20 seconds! Just like The Little Princess, we must all keep washing our hands, even if we don't want to. Click on the link below to hear a handwashing story, that will make you chuckle!

Lesson 3 - Science
Today you are going to learn about seed dispersal, which is the important stage in a plant’s life when the seeds are scattered.

Picture
MEMORY LINK
In Year 3, you learnt about what a plant needs to stay alive. This will help you understand why it is important that seeds are dispersed.
Picture
First, click on the link below and watch the video to revise last week’s learning and find out how and why seeds are dispersed:

Now, click on the link below to watch the BBC Bitesize video, read the information and complete the activity:
How do plants spread their seeds?
Picture
Activity: Draw diagrams to show the main ways that seeds are dispersed. Underneath each diagram, explain the process using these key words: dispersal, water, explosion and wind.

End of the day - Competition time!
Generation Lockdown are giving you the opportunity to write about your experience during Lockdown. They would like you to submit a piece of writing about what life has been like. This could include a personal experience, a poem or a short story. The deadline is midnight on Friday 17th July. If you would like to find out more, follow the link below and read through the information with an adult at home:

That's everything for this week! We hope that you have a restful weekend with your family and we will see you back here on Monday morning!

Best wishes,
Sophie, Alice and Charlotte
