Good morning Year 5!
Welcome back to our home learning blog.  Thank you to all the children that emailed us yesterday.  It was lovely to see the work that you had been doing.  We have also been checking your Mathletics and Active Learn progress and are pleased at the effort that lots of children are putting in.
Remember that you can email us at year5@bgfjs.org with photos of your work as well as any questions and worries.

A message from Lauren:
"Hello Year 5!
I would like to congratulate the four children that have started on Duolingo.  There is one student with over 400XP points already!  I look forward to seeing the progress of everyone else that would like to join the challenge.  If you missed the challenge and would like more information, click here.
Please make sure that you put your first name as your username so that I know who you are and can include you in the prizes when we return to school.
Adios!"

Before you begin today's home learning, spend a few minutes thinking about your wellbeing.

In this lesson, we will be analysing the author's choice of language. We will look at vocabulary meaning in depth and how words and phrases have been used specifically to add to an overall atmosphere, created purposefully by the author.

Now, spend 30 minutes on Active Learn.  Choose a book that your teacher has set you and read it carefully.  Each time you see a little green bug, click on it and answer the questions.  You will earn points that you can redeem in your account.

Lesson 3 - Computing

What is an algorithm?
Picture
Memory link:
Last term, we learnt how to use technology safely. We now know our online responsibilities and strategies for how to keep safe. While completing your home learning, you will be able to put this learning into practice and continue to stay safe online.
This term in computing, we are going to be learning about coding and programming. Today, we are asking the question, What is an algorithm?
Click on the button below, read through the information and watch the videos to find out:
What is an algorithm?
This is called a flow chart.  Flow charts help us to make decisions.  This flow chart helps us make the decision of whether we should eat lunch.
Picture
Notice the following things:
  • Each question has a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer
  • There is a repeat loop after the question, ‘Are you hungry?’
You can only start eating if it is lunchtime, you have food and you are hungry.

Now, using this template, have a go at creating a flow chart to help someone make the decision of whether they should go to bed.  When writing your questions, remember that each question has a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.
