Thursday 16th April 2020

16/4/2020

Good morning Year 5!

Have you heard about 99 year-old Tom Moore, who decided to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise £1000 for the NHS?  Lots of people heard about his story and sponsored him and he has now raised over £14 million pounds!  You can learn about him here:
Tom Moore on Newsround
Here is today's timetable.  Remember that you don't have to do all of the activities, as it is the Easter holidays, but we think that you will enjoy them!  You can send us photos of what you have been doing to year5@bgfjs.org .

Holiday activity 1:
Mathletics
Picture
Your teachers have been setting you lots of activities to do on your Mathletics account.  Well done to those children who have been completing them.

Today, spend some time completing the activities set for you and then choose your own to do.  Perhaps you could challenge a friend in 'Live Mathletics'.

See if you can get 1000 points this week and earn yourself a bronze certificate.  I wonder if anyone has managed to earn themselves a silver certificate yet?

Time for a break!
Your brain will need a rest so wash your hands for 20 seconds, grab yourself some water and relax.
Perhaps you could ask someone in your household what they have been doing this morning.

Holiday activity 2: Poetry
During the first week of home learning, you learnt to write an acrostic poem about Ernest Shackleton.  Today, learn to write a limerick, which is another type of poem.

Click on the link below to learn what a limerick is and then have a go at writing your own.  You can write it about anything you like.
What is a limerick?

Lunch:
Time to get some fuel for your body and brain to keep you healthy!  Remember that fruit and vegetables will help to give you a strong immune system.
Don't forget to wash your hands for 20 seconds before you eat.

Holiday activity 3:  Art

Have a go at some art this afternoon.  Here are some suggestions:
  • Make a Tube Owl!
DK have provided some instructions for you to follow.  All you need is a cardboard tube.  If you don't have paints, you could use colouring pencils or just a pencil to create patterns and shaded areas.

  • Shadow Drawing!
Watch this video to see how you can create drawings out of the shadows of objects.  You could use a lamp as your light source, or use the sun streaming in through a window.
Shadow Drawing
This Belgian artist, Vincent Bal, has turned his shadow drawings into different things!

End of the day: Handwriting
Have a go at copying out your limerick poem in your best joined Jarman handwriting.
Use a pen or a sharp pencil.

1, 2, 3, 4 are your feet flat on the floor?
5, 6, 7, 8 is your back nice and straight?
9, 10, 11, 12 is your pen/pencil correctly held?

That's all for today Year 5.

We're missing seeing you all every day and hope that you are all happy and well.  If you have any questions or worries about anything, you can email us at year5@bgfjs.org or Julianne at well-being@bgfjs.org .
Remember to be washing your hands as often as you can for 20 seconds each time.

Best wishes and keep healthy!
Charlotte, Alice and Sophie
