Good morning Year 5!

Today marks the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth in 1820. She was an inspiring nurse during the Crimean War, who saved the lives of many soldiers and overcame barriers stopping women from having a career and living fulfilled lives.

Florence Nightingale and all of the healthcare workers, who are working hard during this time, are an inspiration to us all. If you would like to say 'thank you' to these heroes, click on the link below and get creative:

Here is today's timetable:

9am - I hope you are ready to wake up your body and brain!

Lesson 1 - Numeracy
Today we are going to explore equivalent fractions.  We would like you to watch the White Rose video and then work through the videos and activities on BBC Bitesize. Follow the 2 links below:

Break - Florence Nightingale said, "Life is a splendid gift. There is nothing small in it."  While you are having a break, think about what this means to you. What small things are you grateful for this morning?

Lesson 2 - Literacy

MEMORY LINK:
In Autumn Term, we learnt that a modal verb shows how necessary or possible the main verb is. Watch the video from BBC Bitesize to remind yourselves and then have a go at ordering modal verbs from 'most likely' to 'least likely'.
What are modal verbs?

Click on the link below to listen to Chapter 30:
Holly has just been taken upstairs with the black cats and Varjak Paw remainded with his family. Although his family think he has made the right decision, Varjak does not seem so sure. What do you think he should do next?

We would like you to write a note of advice to Varjak, using modal verbs to persuade him of what to do next.

Now that you have written your advice to Varjak Paw, lets find out what Jalal's advice is. Click on the link below and listen to Chapter 31 to find out:

Lunch - It's that time of the day again. Once you have washed your hands for 20 seconds, you could ask an adult to help you make one of these tasty recipes from BBC Food:

Lesson 3 - PSHCE
This week we are starting a new topic, where we will be learning about relationships. We have relationsips with family, friends and peers and need them in order to learn about ourselves and others. During this strange time, relationships may look very different but they are still so important.

Today, we are going to be learning about character traits, which are aspects of a person's behaviour which we value. For example, a person might be kind or creative.

Let's begin with a game! You can play this with siblings and other family members. To set up for the game, here is what you need to do:
Picture
To play the game, someone needs to read out the questions below and the others will run to the sticky note that is most true for them.
  1. I enjoy exercising with Joe Wicks in the morning.
  2. When I am faced with a decision, I take my time and am careful.
  3. I enjoy learning new things, even if they are challenging.
  4. I like to read spooky books, which make me jump!
  5. I like spending time on my own to recharge.

You may have noticed that you all had different answers but that's ok because we are all wonderfully different but equally important!

We would now like you to have a go at the activity below:

Think of someone you know well and ask yourself these questions about them:
  • What are their positive character traits?
  • Are they different/similar to you? How? Why?
  • What do you admire about them?
If the person you were thinking of is in your house, why don't you tell them the positive thoughts you had about them? It's always nice to encourage others and to be encouraged!

End of the day - Weekly Mission
This week Kaz and Julianne have asked us to draw pictures or write words to show our feelings and hopes about the past, present and future. Once you have completed yours, you can email it to well-being@bgfjs.org and year5@bgfjs.org. Here is Sophie's:

That's everything for today Year 5!

Remember to keep feeding your imagination by reading for at least 30 minutes every day on Active Learn or from a book at home. You can take the quizzes on Active Learn, but remember to read the book first so that you can score highly! Make sure you are also completing the activities on Mathletics, which your teachers have set for you.

We hope that you and your family have a restful evening.
Best wishes,
Sophie, Alice and Charlotte
