(If you missed last lesson, then you will need to do it today instead. Click here for last week's lesson and scroll down to Science.)
Let's get started!
Fill in the top two boxes of this sheet (you can draw your own):
Now, have a look at your container. What do you notice?
Fill in the bottom two boxes of your sheet.
Did you know that lots of the salt that we use in cooking comes from sea water?

Lesson 4 - Music
Today, we are learning about variations, which are ways that we can change music.
Think about these things as you watch how this pianist creates different variations of a very well known song.
Write down your thoughts and ideas while you are watching it.
Now listen to 'My Favourite Things' from the Sound of Music.
Now listen to this re-arrangement. The saxophone/clarinet player John Coltrane is probably the most well-known saxophonist in the world. He plays jazz music which uses a lot of improvisation (making up a lot of variations!). There are lots of variations in the melody, the harmony (chords), the rhythm and of course the instruments used are totally different.
Now, listen to Blackbird by The Beatles.
Now, listen to this a jazz arrangement by a pianist for a jazz trio (piano, double bass & drum kit). Listen to the melody variations and the rhythm variations. There are also more variations in the dynamics (loud, quiet, etc) compared to the original.
Finally, listen to 'Don't Matter' by Akon covered by Ariana Grande and lots of other people on Tik Tok.
This is a simple melody on its own without accompaniment, but the different singers have different tones in their voice. Each one is unique (and remember Ariana Grande’s one is recorded in a music studio and the others are recorded on a phone which makes the sound quality different. Have a listen and see what you think of the different variations other singers (mostly from Indonesia on this video) do. |
That's all for today, Year 5! Well done for putting lots of effort into your learning.
Best wishes,
Charlotte, Alice, Sophie, Nasima and Lauren
