Wednesday 29th April 2020

28/4/2020

Good morning,

We are half way through the week! Thank you to all of the children and parents who have emailed us with your fantastic work this week. We love looking at it and some of your personification was really impressive! Remember you can always email us on year5@bgfjs.org and we will try to get back to you.

If you have any worries, Kaz and Julianne would love to hear from you at well-being@bgfjs.org.

Here is your timetable for today:
Picture

Picture
9am - PE with Joe Wicks and time to get your heart racing, ready for a day of learning.

Picture
LESSON 1 - Numeracy
Picture
Memory link - Have a go at these questions to practice and recall yesterday's learning. The missing number problem is a bit trickier so have a go but don't worry if it feels too hard.
Picture
Today you are going to move on to White Rose Summer Term Week 2, Lesson 3, where you will be adding decimals with different numbers of decimal places. Your place value will be very important for today's learning and you will be able to draw on your learning from Monday's lesson. Complete the activities carefully before checking your answers.

Break time - It's time to have a little brain break. Get yourself a glass of water and a healthy snack. Don't forget to wash your hands for 20 seconds.

LESSON 2 - Literacy
Today you are going to draw a map of the setting of Varjak Paw so far. It will be a working document, which means that you will continue to add to it as you explore the city further.
Picture
In school we talk a lot about visualisation.
As a reader, we are constantly building pictures in our mind, bringing characters, settings and action to life!
As an author, we try really hard to describe things in a way that allows readers to do the same.
Today we will practice this skill.
Picture
MEMORY LINK:
  • What do you know about the city Varjak lives in?
  • Where did his story start? Where will he go next?
  • What description has really stuck in your head?
  • Did the settings remind you of anywhere you already know?
Picture
Part of painting pictures in our minds is making links to real life experiences. For example when S.F Said described the city, I immediately pictured similar buildings to the ones I see every day in Canary Wharf.
Picture
See Alice’s example but don’t be put off if you imagine it completely differently...that’s what makes reading so exciting!
Draw a map of the city Varjak lives in. Try to be as detailed as possible - you may want to go back and listen to old chapters to remind you of some details.  You do not have to annotate your map but you may find it helpful. Don't forget to leave space so that you can add to your map as we learn more.

Picture
Lunch time - Well done for all of your hard work this morning. Wash your hands for 20 seconds, eat some lunch and talk to somebody at home about this morning's learning. Make sure you leave the computer for this break to give your eyes and brain a rest.

LESSON 3 - Geography

Let's start our new geography topic with a see, think, wonder...

Picture
            Where does the river start?
            What makes the water flow?

You are going to find out!
1. Start by visiting Tig Tag.
2. Type 'River processes' into the search bar.
3.  Watch the River processes video.
Picture
4. Answer the question: Why do some rivers bend?
You could draw a diagram to explain your answer.

End of day -  Yoga

During this time, some people are taking yoga up as a hobby, including Sophie and Alice.
Yoga is a way to exercise our bodies, our breath and our minds and it increases our strength, flexibility, and coordination.

Watch this video and have a go at the 10 yoga poses it teaches you. Some of them will feel quite tricky at first but the more you practice, the easier it will become!

Don't forget that all of our blog posts stay up so you can always revisit any fun activities that you didn't have time to finish or that you want to enjoy again.

That's all for today year 5!

Remember that we still want you to be reading for 30 minutes every day and talking to someone at home about what you are reading. If you have run out of books at home, log in to ActiveLearnPrimary for an online library set by your teachers.

Have a lovely evening and see you tomorrow,
Alice, Sophie and Charlotte
