Wednesday 8th April 2020

8/4/2020

Good morning Year 5! We hope that you enjoyed yesterday's activities and aren't too achy from all that dancing!

Since 1996, every April has marked National Poetry Month. This is a great opportunity to read, hear and enjoy poems. To celebrate this, we are going to be exploring one of Joseph Coelho's poems later today!

Here is your timetable for today:

9.00am - 9.30am - PE with Joe Wicks
L
et's wake up our bodies and start the day with 30 minutes of PE!

Activity 1: Den Building

Today we would like you to spend time making a den. Think creatively about how you can use things in your house to build your den. Maybe you could use sheets, cardboard, plastic bottles or books. Your den could be big enough to fit you in, or small enough to fit a toy in. It's up to you! If you are proud of what you have created, don't forget to email us with some pictures (and your name, so we can celebrate what you have achieved).

Now that you have made your den, have a go at answering these questions:
  • What materials did you use to make your den? Were they good choices? Why?
  • How did you make sure your den stayed up?
  • What would your top tips be for den making?
  • How many people/toys could you fit inside your den?
Use a ruler to measure:
  • the length of your den
  • the height of your den
  • the width of your den
  • objects inside of your den

Find these angles in your den:
  • an acute angle
  • a right angle
  • an obtuse angle

Break Time: All that building deserves a break! Wash your hands for 20 seconds, have a glass of water and talk to someone in your home.

Activity 2: Poetry

Read this poem, which is called Beautifully Different, Wonderfully the Same by Joseph Coelho:

The same laughter erupts when a joke finds its giggle.
Same whoop, same cheer
Different smiles.

The same rhythm rocks us when a dance makes us wiggle.
Same hands, same feet
Different styles.

The same warmth in our bellies when we choose to be kind.
Same hug, same high-five
Different bodies.

The same happiness finds us when friendship binds.
Same goal, same win
Different players.

The same sadness within us when darkness creeps.
Same eyes, same sobs
Different tears.

The same joy on our faces when we’re no longer apart.
Same blood, same beat
Same hearts.

Now that you have read the poem, consider these questions:
  • What is the poem about?
  • What images do the words and phrases paint in your mind?
  • How does it make you feel?
  • Is there any repetition? What impact does his have on the reader?

Even though we are not seeing each other at the moment, we are still sharing in so many things, as this poem shows. Now that we have explored Joseph Coelho's poem, we would like you to write your own, with all of the things that are true for you, your family, friends and teachers at this time. To do this, change the words in blue and keep the rest of the poem the same.

Example:
The same sleepiness fills us when the sun disappears.
Same yawn, same moon
Different pillows.

Lunch Time:  Time for some brain food! Make sure you are keeping up that balanced diet.

Activity 3: Spanish
Hola! Today you will be learning how to introduce yourself responding to questions like ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cuántos años tienes? ¿De dónde eres? and ¿Dónde vives?

Watch this tutorial and use the comic strip below to practise and follow along:

Now that you have had a go practising on your own, you could spend time practising with a family member and teach them what you've learnt.

End of the day: Character Making
For your final task of the day, we would like you to do something a little bit silly. We would like you to make a character out of objects around your home.
  • First, select a character. This could be someone in your family, someone you have read about or someone who only exists in your imagination.
  • Next, look around you and decide what objects you will use to create your character. It could be pots and pans, stationary, shoes, books or spoons.
  • Then, spend time creating your character. Think about how you could emphasise features with objects and make sure you give it a name.
  • Finally, please email us photos of your character, so that we can all share in the fun!
Here are some pictures of Sophie's different characters! We hope you have as much fun as she did!
